The key to creating any gorgeous hairstyle is to start with healthy, shiny hair. Guest editor and NYC salon owner Sam Brocato shares his best beauty tips on how to score healthy hair even after months of winter abuse. Sam and his team have worked with countless celebrities including Britney Spears, Hilary Duff, and Claire Danes.

Step 1: Lather Up Gently
Basic winter hair care starts with a gentle shampoo that won’t strip hair of moisture. Try to shampoo less than 3 times a week and use a dry shampoo in between washings. If you simply can’t part with a favorite shampoo or daily wash, blend two parts shampoo with one part conditioner for added moisture. If you’re ready for something new, try a conditioning treatment that has a mild foaming agent like my Brocato Constructor.
Step 2: Sleep On It
Put the beauty back into beauty sleep by using an overnight hair treatment. Place a hair mask from the mid shaft of wet or dry hair down to protect against moisture loss during the night. Repeat this process as often as like since there is no such thing as over-conditioning hair.
Step 3: Give Your Scalp Some TLC
Just like the skin on your face and body, your scalp gets drier in the winter. If it seems tight and flaky, treat it to a massage. Knead your head for two minutes every evening to boost healthy blood circulation and slough off dead skin cells.
Step 4: Feed Your Hair
You are what you eat. Consuming foods rich in essential fatty acids can do wonders for making your hair look shiny and thick. I suggest adding more avocados, walnuts, and almonds to your daily diet during the winter. Here’s a great avocado hair mask recipe–it’s so natural, you can even drink it! In a blender, combine one very ripe avocado with one tablespoon each of olive oil, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar. Blend until the texture is creamy, then massage onto damp hair and put on a shower cap. Step into a hot shower to steam your hair for ten minutes before rinsing. The apple cider vinegar really adds to hair shine!

Your hair is gorgeous!
I like tip 3. I love getting head massages.
I have the driest birds nest on my head. I’m def going to try some of these out.
I definately think I’m going to try sleeping with a hair mask on
I have to wash my hair everyday otherwise it gets super oily but the ends are getting dry, I don’t know what to do. I’m trying not to wash t everyday but it’s so hard, it look horrible. It’s summer here in Brazil, very hot. And when I exercise, I cannot not wash my hair. There is also the beach, and the pool, which means salt and clorine. I don’t style my hair anymore because Im afraid it will make things worse. How can I not shampoo everyday?
why dont you try using a dry shampoo? i like the rockaholic and the tressame one in their new collection with the green caps. it smells really good. it works for me, but some people dont like the feeling of it, but i dont notice anything. haha
Hey Pris!
Try skipping a day, and shampoo your hair every other day. Even if your hair gets too greasy on the day you don’t shampoo– Put it up in a bun, or ponytail.. Eventually, your hair will get better if you start to shampoo less frequently, as opposed to every other day… Don’t be afraid to style your hair! Just make sure you are using products that are healthy for your hair! Like DOVE, or JOICO, or BEDHEAD

amazing tips! i will try the hair treatment at night! =)
a scalp massage? interesting….
is it possible to make your hair thicker or can you only make it appear thicker?
Have you tried thickening shampoos? Or even Volumizing shampoos: Those will make your hair look thicker. But thickening shampoos actually (supposedly) thicken the hair strand… You wouldn’t see a difference right away with those, however, I don’t think: I think it takes a few weeks to start noticing a huge difference
Hope this helps!

i cant not wash my hair everyday though.. lol
has anyone tried that WEN conditioner i guess your not supposed to wash your hair or something but that wen looks really good!
omg, i tried these steps, and they made such a diffference! i had so much trouble with not washing my hair every day though.. i cheated some days, lol. but seriously, my hair looks so much healthier now.
Great tips, thanks!
This is such a great tip its going to help me so much.
Your the best. Thanks!
i am somebody who works out nearly everyday. it is very hard to not wash my hair each day since it gets all nasty. is there another way?
Im on the same boat as you :(!
oh and you guys, DRINK LOTS OF WATER! it will help your hair as well as your body be healthy =D
Thanks for the tips!
i love this tip! my hair always breaks & it’s so thick, so it never looks good. but these tips are helping my hair sooo much !
I have very healthy hair, but I’ll be sure to try some of these on top of it
im def gonna do these.
My hair thanks you for posting these tips. This winter has been a rough one. I never knew a scalp massage could help so much. I guess thats why they do it at the salon when getting your hair washed (also my favorite part).
i love this tips on good hair, because mine is awful! but i will try this tips and see how it’s working! :*
Those are some very good tips! I really want to try some of those out, thanks for posting them!
i love your tips and tutorials! you were my first and only guru i’ve ever subscribed to! keep it up =)

i like the idea of an overnight hair mask.
great tips! would love to try out that avacado mask
very helpful. great tips!
I’m definitely going to try mixing conditioner into my shampoo… I have really greasy hair so I have to wash it pretty often! My hair is pretty shiny, but I wish it were softer and silkier. Can’t wait to try these tips out
i’m gonna try the two parts shampoo, one part conditioner thing because i need my daily wash (curly hair. i can only brush it wet and i look like crazy if i don’t wash it in the morning - i guess i move a lot sleeping). but the best trick is eating healthy. not only for your hair, but skin and body too.
Totally agree!
thanks! I just got out of the shower too =)
Awesome!! I’m going to try this tonight!
I’ll let you know how it works out for me!
Hey! What’s your favorite type of Organic Shampoo? I’m currently using JOICO, and want to try out some different shampoos! Any suggestions?
Sleeping on a silk pillowcase helps? Really? Howso?
That avocado mask sounds like such a good idea!
Hey there! You may have naturally oily hair, or it may be a combination of that as well as the type of conditioner you are using! Make sure that you are not using a moisturizing conditioner, because if you already have naturally “oily” hair, this will not help all that much… I would look into shampoos and conditioners that are made to help your type of hair specifically. I suggest JOICO, (Also known as KPAC). I have naturally oily hair and I find their hair care system works wonders!!
Always smile!

Ha ha ha, soooo true!!!

Hey there!!
I use JOICO, which you can purchase pretty much at any hair salon: I think it’s about 15-19$ CAN per bottle… So less than that in American money. Their line is great- But if you don’t want to pay that much for shampoo and conditioners, I would suggest using DOVE moisturizing shampoo and conditioners: I love DOVE as well. They leave your hair so soft and silky
Hope this helps!
Always smile!

I never thought of that! Great tip, Me!
I’ll trade with you!! I’ve always wanted curly hair! Heeheehee!
i have a head full of curly hair as well. I usually flat iron it out though unless I’m feeling like having an all natural day. Im going to try that hair mask recipe because my hair tends to get dull prior to getting my hair colored.
Some hair dressers say that washing your hair every day isn’t all that healthy for your hair anyways: When you wash your hair every day, your hair apparently believes that it is needed to replenish its moisture more quickly, and so your hair becomes greasy far more quickly… this is just what I’ve heard from my hair dressers, anyways
Always smile!
-A
I tried this once, but I found my hair was quite limp and frizzy and dry the next day… It might just be my hair, though, heehee!
Always smile!
-A
Hey there!
My hair dresser told me that washing your hair every day is the reason why your hair becomes greasy easily: When you wash your hair every day, it tricks your hair into believing that it needs to replenish moisture more quickly, and it ends up replenishing too much moisture, too quickly. So, your hair becomes greasy a lot more quickly than if you were to wash your hair every other day… Hope this makes sense… Try skipping a day for a while (like a month), and just put your hair up the days you skip, maybe?
Always smile!

Omg I do too! It’s a pain in the bum, don’t you think?!
Hey there!
I have the exact same problem! Have you figured anything out that may work?? Sometimes I put mine up at night before I go to sleep, but then I end up with a dent from the elastic, in the middle on my hair
I would not be able to stand it! LOL. I take my showers really, really hot… Which is horrible for your hair!
Awesome tips.
I definitely need to try the avocado hair mask. Sounds amazing.
Thanks for the post!
I love using avocado, olive oil, aloe vera, eggs and lime on my scalp and hair!!! all give me lots of shine, soft hair and hidrates!!! simple and great, just once a week or every 15 days
those are some good tips…however, i never could sleep with my hair wet, i alwasy wake up with a stuffy nose and the feeling that my head is swollen
One a week I put an olive oil over night hair mask…just olive oil. The next I day I wash my hair, and it is great, it makes my hair soft, shinny and frizz-free.
This is such a great idea! I’ve been watching your youtube tutorials for a few years now and I love how you keep it fresh!
I LOVE my hair. It is naturally straight and shiny. Another tip is to try not to fry your hair as much! Air dry instead of blow drying~
What products do you girls recommend for hairmask… to use overnight?
Where can I find a dry shampoo? I really want to try it.
i think i’ll go give myself a head massage now
These are really good guidelines. My hair is horrible right now, I need to get it cut so bad haha. I live in Michigan, it seems like the winter lasts forever. I need spring already!
i have curly hair so its hard to have like extreme shine but i think its fine. the problem comes when it straighten it. it doesn’t get dull, but its not as shiny and silky looking as i’d like it to. i’ma try some of these tips
thanks for the tips! I really need some! But I think the most important is your shampoo, OMG the things in the store are evil! dont buy those, try a sulfate free/sodium lauryth free shampoo (sooo hard to find, caue most have sodium lauryth something else) even if u gotta spend a lot, and dont wach very often and your hair will look amazing!
I put olive oil in my hair before I wash it like twice a month, not that I saw much difference, but, I dunno. Hope it works
Looks like I’ve gotta stop shampooing my hair more
Great tips btw
Never used a hair mask, I guess it’s worth a try.
i think i’m going to try these tips and tricks out (:
Thank you! This is very helpful!
perfect tips - i will begin today
thanks
I would be tempted to eat it, LOL!!!!
Such good ideas!
I really need to find some of that dry shampoo stuff. Any suggestions?
<3 k
try rinsing your hair in cold water, it may suck after you take a nice hot shower, but it seriously makes it shiny.
another alternative is to rub an ice cube on your hair.
I wish I have time to do this. I barely sleep since school start. hahahaa
i keep me hair shiny by not putting too much products or heat on it. luck for me i dont have to straighten it because i have natural straight hair =]
I’ll definitely try the hair mask! Sounds awesome
Thanks, my hair is so dry, as my skin is in the winter, I’ve recently tried the Neutrogena hair mask, I’ll definitely try your tips as well….:)
My hair is in some serious need of a hair mask. The winter and my curling iron has really taken alot out of it.
The whole mixing thing reallys works well, my hair seemed softer since normally the shampoo like makes it feel so dry even when its wet in the shower but mixing made a huge difference!
thats great advice, since i have such dry hair , from dying my hair to styling my hair with heat all the time!
Thanks for the great tips! I know they say to not wash everyday but it seems to be what works best for my hair and I have even gotten compliments from my stylist on the condition of my hair. If I skip days its a greasy mess, so I’m sticking to what works.
I have recently switched to Bed Head (Tigi), and I can already see the difference. Not sure if it works for everyone, but their moisturizing shampoo lines are amazing and work great for me!
Anyone else using Bed Head products?
Once a month i do a hot oil treatment - homemade of course! my hair has a lovely shine even with all the straightening!!
Thanks for the tips!
thanks for the tips! I really need this, my hair is so bad in the morning it takes hours to straighten it. Thanks Elessa!
Thanks for the tips. The mask worked really well! Rinsing your hair with cold water instead also works pretty well by closing the cuticle.
what shampoo and conditioner would you recommend ? i’ve always used pantene pro v but i just read a couple scary articles about it having harsh chemicals resulting in rapid hair loss
so i’m definitely looking to switch.
I have oily hair and I just started using Surf from Bumble and Bumble and I love it! It gives me texture and volume! For shine I use Sebastion Trillion, it smells sooo good and makes you hair healthy though out being heavy!
i agree with the first step… but i use paul mitchels tea tree moisurizing shampoo and conditioner but i realy like it because you dont have to wash your hair twice and then shampoo it and + is a color protectant..!
my hair gets soo dry and i color treat it about once every 6 weeks or so so this is a big help
I like these tips… i’ll try tip 3 tonight
Thanks so much for the precious tips that I will keep in mind:))
thank you very much for the tops. my mom is a hairdresser and she recommends the same and there’s also a product that me and her use after every shower for shiny hair, it’s called derm organics leave-in treatement it’s made with argan oil. it works like magic if u use the right amount hope everyone tries it. ask ur hairstylist about it althought she may not know what it is:P
Thanks for the tip! I didn’t know that kneading the head would do that! No wonder when I’m fooling around like that my head felt good.
Thanks
i love love love
oh, great tips
i love the aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner for long hair. it makes my hair suupersoft =)
that sounds so easy too do thanks for the tips
This is so helpful.
i do this and it really works!! also, after blow drying your hair, cool it down with the cold air function on the blow dryer! after straightening too! your hair will be SOOO shiny and SOO soft!
